Der Weg, der sich in Worten ausdrücken lässt, ist nicht der ewige Weg; der Name, der ausgesprochen werden kann, ist nicht der ewige Name.
Das Nichtsein ist der Ursprung von Himmel und Erde; das Sein ist die Wurzel aller Dinge.
Darum betrachtet man aus dem Nichtsein stets das Geheimnis des Weges und aus dem Sein stets seine sichtbaren Anzeichen.
Nichtsein und Sein haben denselben Ursprung, tragen jedoch verschiedene Namen. Beide kann man als tiefgründig bezeichnen. Tiefe über Tiefe – das ist das Tor zu allen Geheimnissen.

Wenn alle unter dem Himmel wissen, was schön ist, entsteht damit auch die Vorstellung des Hässlichen; wenn alle wissen, was gut ist, entsteht damit auch die Vorstellung des Nichtguten.
Sein und Nichtsein bringen einander hervor; Schweres und Leichtes bedingen einander; Langes und Kurzes machen einander sichtbar; Hohes und Niedriges treten durch einander hervor; Ton und Klang stimmen miteinander überein; Vorher und Nachher folgen einander.
Darum behandelt der Mensch des Weges die Angelegenheiten der Welt in der Haltung des Nicht-Handelns und übt die Lehre ohne Worte aus. Die zehntausend Dinge entstehen, ohne dass er sie veranlasst; er lässt sie wachsen, ohne sie zu besitzen; er fördert sie, ohne sich auf seine Fähigkeit zu berufen; sein Werk ist vollendet, doch er rühmt sich dessen nicht. Gerade weil er sich nicht rühmt, vergeht sein Verdienst nicht.
