Duke Zhuang of Zheng Defeats Duan at Yan

Capítulo de vista previaFirst Year of Duke YinVista previa

At first, Duke Wu of Zheng married a woman of the State of Shen named Wu Jiang. Wu Jiang gave birth to Duke Zhuang and Gongshu Duan. Duke Zhuang was born after a difficult labor that greatly frightened Jiang, so he was named “Wusheng,” meaning “born feet first,” and she came to dislike him. Jiang favored Gongshu Duan and wished to have him made heir apparent. She repeatedly asked Duke Wu to do so, but Duke Wu refused.

After Duke Zhuang succeeded to the throne, Jiang asked that the place called Zhi be granted to Gongshu Duan as his fief. Duke Zhuang said, “Zhi is a dangerous strategic place. Guo Shu died there. Let him choose any other place.” Jiang then asked for Jing, and Gongshu Duan was settled there. Everyone called him “Grand Uncle of the Capital.”

Ji Zhong said to Duke Zhuang, “If the walls of a secondary city extend for more than three hundred zhang in circumference, it becomes a danger to the state. Under the institutions of the former kings, the largest secondary cities could not exceed one-third the size of the capital; medium-sized ones could not exceed one-fifth; and small ones could not exceed one-ninth. The walls of Jing now violate these regulations. This is not permitted under the ancestral system, and Your Lordship will not be able to endure the consequences.”
