Emerlen privacy policy
BooksWhale LLC · 2026-11-02
Scope and contact
Effective November 2, 2026. BooksWhale Limited Liability Company (BooksWhale LLC) provides Emerlen for iPhone, Mac and Android. This policy covers Emerlen’s local writing, file export and store-purchase features, including previews and versions offered for distribution. It does not announce store availability or automatic cloud synchronization. Contact xiaoguang@bookswhale.com about privacy questions. The BooksWhale website has a separate privacy policy.
Writing and preferences on your device
Manuscripts, chapters, notes, plans, writing sessions, history, conflict copies and removed material are stored in a local database. Writing statistics, preferences and the start of your voluntary experience are handled locally. Emerlen does not require a BooksWhale author account and does not upload your writing to a developer server. It contains no advertising, developer analytics, automatic crash-report upload or AI service that receives your manuscript.
Files and backups you choose
You choose where to save or open files through the system file picker. A complete project backup contains text, notes, structure, history and recovery material; ordinary text exports contain less. Preferences and experience status are not part of manuscript project backups. These exported files are not encrypted by Emerlen. Their integrity checks can detect damage but do not keep the contents secret. Anyone who can access a backup may be able to read it.
System services and cloud drives
Your operating system may back up app data according to its settings. A file provider or cloud drive you choose may process exported files under its own policies, including processing outside your country. The current release configuration does not enable Emerlen production cloud synchronization, and Apple and Android manuscripts do not synchronize automatically. Local storage does not mean every system backup or user-chosen file stays only on your device.
Purchases through Apple or Google
If you choose to purchase Pro, Apple or Google processes the transaction using your store account and payment method under its own privacy rules. Emerlen receives product prices and purchase or subscription information needed to verify access, restore purchases and handle pending or revoked access. Emerlen does not receive your bank-card details. It uses the store’s purchase services without a BooksWhale receipt-verification server or third-party subscription service; purchase receipts are not uploaded to BooksWhale.
Purchase information kept on the device
On Android, signed purchase information and purchase tokens are checked on the device and kept in an encrypted private cache tied to the installation, for verifying access during the limited offline window. This cache is excluded from system backup and manuscript exports; raw purchase information is not included in developer logs or passed into the writing interface. On Apple devices, the app relies on Apple’s verified subscription information and does not create an additional persistent transaction archive. Apple and Google may keep their own transaction records. Purchase-cache encryption does not encrypt your manuscripts or exported backups.
Support information you send
If you contact us, we receive the message, your reply address and any attachments you choose to provide. We use them to investigate and respond, and retain them as needed for that request and applicable recordkeeping requirements. We do not automatically receive your manuscript library. Avoid sending private manuscript content unless needed and you intentionally choose to share it. The website contact form is covered by the website privacy policy.
Your choices and deletion
You can export your writing, keep complete backups and remove local works or app data. Removed material and history can remain in recovery records; deleting a work is not a promise to erase every historical copy. Removing the app or its data can make local writing unrecoverable, so back up first. Deletion inside Emerlen does not remove copies you exported or backups held by system or file providers. Manage those copies with the relevant provider. You can contact us about information sent to support, including access, correction or deletion requests; applicable legal obligations may affect what can be removed.
Security and policy updates
Keep your device and backups protected. Emerlen does not provide manuscript end-to-end encryption, encrypted backup archives or a permanent cloud copy, and cannot guarantee zero data loss. We will update this page if the features or data practices described here change; the effective date identifies the published version. Any future production cloud service will need its own clear data explanation before it is enabled.
